Don’t forget about your sailing boat: be prepared for the warm season by following our checklist
Summer is definitely over, hopefully, you have spent your well-deserved sailing boat holidays, Autumn is yet to come… and what are you doing now? If you are planning on leaving your boat moored at the port until Spring arrives, you really must read this article.
As a matter of fact, except for those sailors that like to participate in the local Winter races, most of the boat owners tend to forget about their sailing boat during Winter.
Here’s a complete checklist that you can use to organize all the maintenance works: this way, you will be more than ready once the warmer season arrives!
#1 Onsite check
Most probably, even if you did not opt for a sailing cruise this Summer, you spent more time than usual on your sailing boat. For this reason, between one splash and the other, you have noted that there are some things that need to be changed or, at least, fixed.
You might have to change the boat rigging that could have lost their elasticity and resistance among the different seasons or, it could be the case that you need to change everything that’s related to the rudder system or, even, you might have realized that you would like to sail in a more comfortable way and, therefore, you would like to install a mainsail furling system…etc. Whichever is your need, it is important to have an onsite check on your sailing boat to understand what needs to be done before Spring arrives.
#2 Fill your wish list
You have done your onsite but how can you remember everything? Easy, we suggest you use the old but gold method consisting in writing down notes with pen and paper. Fill your shopping list and remember to be tidy while filling it: it will be easier to understand it when you will purchase the spare parts, or you will contact the professionals.
For example, you could split your list by product categories: if the maintenance needs to be done at the rudder, create the category “Rudder system” under which, using a bulk list, you can write all the components that need to be changed or repaired; if the maintenance applies to the rigging, proceed in the same way by listing below each rigging divided by their use (mainsail, jib, spinnaker, etc.).
Now that you have your wish list ready, it is time to nail it into maintenance!
#3 Contact the sector’s professionals
If we previously told you to adopt the old but gold method of using pen and paper, you should now opt for the digital way: get your computer, tablet, or smartphone and do your research to find out who are the professionals that can help you to restore your sailing boat.
If you already have some technical knowledge and you already know what you need, there are tons of e-commerce websites from which you can buy sailing equipment. This way, you will not have to go around many shops and easily buy from home.
Then, we advise you to contact your trusted shipyard or a professional installer that is geographically closed to where your boat is.
Following this simple and even trivial guide, you will not have to rush when Spring arrives!
